First-year college student are always looking forward to new school, new friends and new challenges. However they also have a mix feeling about their time in school. They know that they may experience something that they did not anticipate. They may find that some classes are more difficult than they thought. They may find that new friends bring different perspective about friendship and relationship. They may find that selecting a field of study is not that easy as they thought. They may find that planning a career is more challenging than what people said.<\/p>\n

Most first year students enjoy their new freedom as they can make their own decisions about what they want to do. There is no teacher to look after them or tell them what to do as in high school. They can skip class without parents\u2019 notice. They can go to party, or play video games all day without anyone know etc. They can go out with new friends without parents\u2019 permission. Few understand that with certain level of freedom, there is also increasing level of responsibility. It is the lack of awareness about the new responsibility that some of them are getting into troubles.<\/p>\n

First year students often have difficulty with time management. Some may find that they have no time for themselves because of school works are overwhelmed. Other may find that they have so much time to do whatever they like since there is no supervision. They have to adjust to new environment and new friends. Some friends are different from friends in high school. Students who live away from home will have to learn how to live with roommates. Some maybe good friends, but some may be strangers; and it is not easy to live with someone you do not know well. Many may struggle with feeling of lonely and sad even they do not want to admit it. Many will feel overwhelmed and even scared as they do not know what to do.<\/p>\n

The best thing to cope with these challenges is to prepare for your time in college. It is important to do that as early as possible. Students must try to develop a plan on when and how to study, including where to study and how long they must study. They must plan on their time to go out with friends, to involve in school activities, and when to go to sleep etc. Many students resist the idea of having a time management plan but I have observed over the years that students who take an active part in managing their time are likely to do well in college. The most important thing leading to college success is preparation. A well-prepared student will always do better than students who are smart but not well prepared. Smart students may learn well but without preparation they can easily get distracted by other activities. Only by being prepared and follow a strict discipline will help them achieve their educational goals.<\/p>\n

Today many students are passive about their education. They go to college without a clear direction. Many do that because their parents want them go or their friends also go to college. They go to classes but not serious about learning as they do not have a clear learning objective but just passing through. And that seems to be fine as they did it in high school without putting any extra effort. Some of them did well in high school because they know how to memorize things better than their classmates so they continue this pattern in college. They take easy classes, do as little work as they can get away with, and take whatever grades they can get. They have no plan for the future so they select any field of study that they could at that time, take the same classes that their friends are taking so they can be with their friends. If they do not do well in one field of study, they switch to another and repeat the same thing. To them, study in college is like go to a market and select whatever they like at that time. They do not pay attention about learning but only go after a degree. Few even think about what kind of job that they will get after graduate.<\/p>\n

What will happen to them if they are not taking an active part on their education? If they drift from one class to another, not engage in anything, not grab into anything, not learning anything then their lives will be similar to that. They will work from one job to another with a lot of up and down. They will go through life just like in a dream, floating from one place to another without any direction and let things happen to them. As they grow older, they will feel bitter as they will start to compare themselves with others. Without a solid knowledge and skills, they will not be able to achieve anything in this highly competitive world.<\/p>\n

As college student, you must be honest with yourself. You must ask yourself why are you going to college? What kind of work that you want to do? What kind of career that you want to have? What field of study do you want to learn? If you are not sure, ask your school counselors, talk to your professors, ask your relatives, search the Internet to get the information that you need. Follow the market trends, not in your local but also global trends. If your school does not offer that field that you want, you could find another school. You must actively do what it takes to get you the information that can help you make the right decision.<\/p>\n

Today college education is not a luxury but a necessity. You will have to select the best field of study that will get you the best job and the best career possible. You only have four years to do that and in that short time, what you do today will determine your future and your life. \u00a0Eventually, you will have to find a place to live; you cannot live with your parents forever. You will have to make a living as you cannot depend on your family to support you. You will have to find a job; you may not get the job of your dreams. (I am sure some of you dreaming to be movie stars) but you will get a job based on your knowledge that you learned in school. If you select the right field of study, you will find a job that you will love and continue to build your career to higher level. Your future depends on what you do today so set your goal and make your plan now. Do not wait because if you do not do it now, when will you? Please keep in mind that everyday there are several million students go to college. They all have the same dream and want the same thing that you want, and many of them already have plans to achieve their dream.
