A first year student wrote to me: \u201cInformation Technology (IT) field has a bright future and pays a lot of money. I want to study IT but I do not know whether I could do well in this field? How do I know that I will be successful?<\/p>\n

Answer: You should select the field of study based on your passion, your ability, and your career plan. You do NOT select a field because it pays a lot of money. If you only think about money then you will be disappointed. There were thousands of students who studied business finance, and stock trading five years ago with the hope of making a lot of money but after the financial crisis, they could not even find any job today. You need to select a field of study that you enjoy then commit to complete it within a shortest time possible. With your knowledge and skills you can build a career that will last a lifetime. Today company do not care of what you know or want degree you have but they care about what you can do for them with your skills.<\/p>\n

Basically, if you select a field that you really like than you will do well no matter how difficult it is. On the contrary, if you do not like something then you will struggle no matter how easy it may seem. For example, math is difficult for some students but there are students who enjoy math. Some students think programming is hard but there are students who love programming so much that they write code every day. Information technology is a promising field but it is also a challenging area for some. And if you are not up for the challenge, you will not do well. The question is how do you know whether you are really fit for the IT career or not? How can you be successful in IT? Here is a list of things that may help you to determine whether IT is best for you.<\/p>\n

The reason software developers have jobs because they want to build something for users. Most IT workers are creators with strong imagination as they like to innovate new things.<\/b><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You have patience: This is a common character of most successful IT workers. They are patiently working to create something from each line of code that they wrote. When the software has problems, they do not mind to spend a lot of time to fix them. Successful IT workers work well under pressure and do not lose their patience.<\/b><\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You are determined: Most IT projects are challenging and sometime frustrating but successful IT workers never give up. They are determined to give their best to develop high quality product within the time allowed<\/b><\/p>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You do not mind doing several things at once: Software projects and IT works does not follow a defined structure as in manufacturing or office. At any time, you may be asked to do two or four things at once to get things done. For example, you are coding and talking to your customers on the phone at the same time; you go to meeting but answering your emails with the smartphone. One day you do programming, the next day you do testing then go to several review meetings but you always do well because you can control your work.<\/b><\/p>\n

Most successful IT people adopt the lifelong learning attitude as they are always continued to learn.<\/b><\/p>\n

7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You do not mind working long hours: Technology industry does not have regular working hours. When computer or servers go down, you must work to get them back. When defects happen, you may have to stay longer to fix them to meet schedule. You are committed to get thing done regardless of the time.<\/b><\/p>\n

8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You want to move up fast: There are many opportunities in IT industry. The career path is wide open to start from the low to high level as you set your pace. The better you can do the work, the faster you can climb up to higher levels. Many senior managers or Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in IT industry are still in the late 20s or 30s. This is the youngest and most dynamic industry that you can find. (Steve Jobs and Bill Gates became billionaire when they were in their early 30s).
