A student wrote to me: \u201cI will be attending university next year but I am still not sure about what to study. My father wants me to study engineering but my uncle who reads your blog, suggests that I should study Computer Science. Do you have any suggestion? Please advice.”<\/p>\n

Answer: According to a new 2012 industry study, 70% of all new jobs across all STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) will be in Information Technology (IT) where the most future jobs will be. Today every country is having a critical shortage of health, engineering and information technology workers. The study found that for all STEM fields, almost everything requires computer skills as Information technology is being applying widely among these fields. This means that the highest demand skills in the next decade will be in Information technology (Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information System Management.)<\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Immigration Bureau, over 80% of H1B visas were issued to Information technology workers to come to work in the U.S. which prompt people to complain about the \u201cmassive import\u201d of foreign workers from India and China when U.S. graduates could not find work. However the fact is most unemployed graduates are not majoring in a STEM field or in high demand area. If they graduate in music, literature, theater, or fashion design then they will have difficulty finding work. If people look at the job wanted in U.S. newspapers today, they will find that there are hundred thousand job openings from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, and Facebook that are unfilled. If they look at the global economic report, they will find that India has achieved over $120 billion dollars each year in providing IT outsourcing services and China, Russia, Mexico and Brazil are aggressively competing in this market.<\/p>\n

As a professor, I have seen that in the past few years the recruiting of information technology graduates is highly competitive. Most of my students received three to five job offerings before they even graduate. When I taught in India and China, I also found similar situation when students from Tsinghua, Beijing University or Indian Institute of Technology also receive several job offers. Even in Europe, where unemployment is very high, I also find that there is a shortage of IT skilled people. Last year the UK government has to issue a special immigration laws to \u201cImport\u201d 40,000 to 60,000 Indian IT workers to meet the high demand.<\/p>\n

Based on these facts, my advice: Study Information technology \u2013 you can select Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information System Management and it is your choice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
